Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) refers to accommodation designed for people with significant functional impairments or high support needs. It provides housing solutions that enable individuals with disabilities to live more independently.
Eligibility for SDA is determined by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). People who require SDA must meet specific criteria related to their functional impairment, support needs, and their ability to live independently in alternative housing.
An SDA assessment is a comprehensive evaluation conducted to determine a dwellings suitability as SDA Accommodation. The assessment is conducted by a qualified SDA Assessor against the requirements of the SDA Design Standard.
SDA assessments are conducted by qualified assessors in two stages. They will assess the plans against the SDA Design Standard to ensure the building will achieve compliance. Once built they complete a Final-As-Built inspection to ensure the final build meets the standard. Once all the building elements have been inspected and passed the SDA certification documents are released.
SDA assessments must be conducted by a qualified SDA Assessor. Some assessors have a background in are Occupational Therapy and some have a background in Building Certification. It is highly recommended that you work with someone that has construction experience as this makes the building process much easier. A
